Sustainable Pest Control: A New Business Standard That Helps Save and Protect the Environment

2025-04-20

In recent years, sustainability has become one of the most important principles in business operations. Companies are increasingly investing in sustainable technologies, more efficient management solutions, and social responsibility. However, sustainability principles are also gradually penetrating specific business areas, such as pest control.

Jurgita Aghasaryan, the Head of the Pest Control and Hygiene Products Division at AB “Kauno grūdai,” states that the company is committed to sustainability across all areas of its operations and has been providing top-quality pest control services to the largest companies in Lithuania for over a decade. In order to contribute to promoting sustainable practices, the company offers innovative solutions that not only effectively protect against pests but also preserve the environment and help businesses save money.

Prevention – The Key Principle of Sustainable Pest Control

As Jurgita Aghasaryan notes, the main principle of sustainable pest control is prevention. By preventing pests from entering facilities in the first place, there is no need to use aggressive chemicals that can harm the environment and health.

“Our team follows the principle that the most important task is to identify potential entry points for pests and, together with the client, make decisions to seal them off. This can involve special mesh on windows, protections for ventilation openings, proper door and gate closures, and more,” explains Jurgita Aghasaryan, Head of the Pest Control and Hygiene Products Division at AB “Kauno grūdai.”

For internal premises, the company recommends using live traps. "If a pest does enter the facility, it is captured and removed without the use of harmful chemicals. We always use live traps indoors, which are safe, durable, and made without plastic. We do not use unrecycled plastic traps or non-recycled cardboard sticky products. Additionally, we are official representatives of an eco-certified manufacturer offering cleaning and hygiene chemical products for professional use,” adds Jurgita Aghasaryan.

More Eco-Friendly Insect Control Solutions

The expert emphasizes that the fight against insects can also be environmentally friendly. AB “Kauno grūdai” offers insect traps that use LED technology, consuming significantly less electricity than traditional devices. “LED traps last longer – the bulbs that attract insects are replaced every three years, while standard bulbs need to be replaced annually. This not only saves companies money but also contributes to sustainability goals. We can also offer more natural solutions. For example, we use moth traps with pheromones, as well as mechanical tools without chemicals, which are more eco-friendly,” she states.

If insects still enter the premises with raw materials or packaging, eradication is done only with the weakest insecticides permitted by the European Union. These are odorless, environmentally friendly, and remain effective for a long time, reducing the need for chemical treatments.

The company is also certified according to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, which confirms that all operational processes meet strict international environmental requirements. This certification not only obligates responsible use of chemicals but also ensures proper waste and packaging management.

"All residues from the work – both chemical and mechanical – are collected and never left on the client's premises, and their disposal is carried out in accordance with the waste management rules of the Republic of Lithuania. This means that from planning to completion, every step is carried out responsibly and sustainably, safeguarding not only people's health but also the environment," emphasizes Jurgita Aghasaryan.

Digitalization – Another Step Towards Sustainability

Digitalization is another area that helps implement sustainable solutions. AB “Kauno grūdai” is transferring its pest control service documentation to the digital space, which allows the elimination of paper use.

“Our technicians-disinfectors use special mobile apps on their phones, which they use on the client's site to inspect, assess, and track inventory, as well as submit reports. Meanwhile, our clients can access the self-service website at any convenient time to view the history of services performed, their duration, detailed reports, and decisions made regarding pest control,” explains Jurgita Aghasaryan.

Corporate Responsibility

Jurgita Aghasaryan emphasizes that sustainable pest control is not only an environmental issue but also a business responsibility for its impact on operations.

“We aim to show that pest control can be carried out responsibly, economically, and sustainably. We focus on high-quality prevention and long-term solutions to reduce the use of chemicals. Our work principles are based not only on environmental protection but also on optimizing client costs. Sustainability is becoming an inseparable part of business, and innovative pest control solutions help ensure a safer environment for both employees and clients,” concludes Jurgita Aghasaryan.
